Author’s Information

Born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1952. Graduated from the Department of Fisheries, School of Marine Science and Technology, Tokai University in 1975. Completed his doctorate program at the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, The University of Tokyo in 1980 (Doctor of Agriculture). Appointed as a research assistant at the Department of Fisheries, School of Marine Science and Technology, Tokai University in the same year. Became a full-time lecturer in 1982, an associate professor in 1988, a professor in 1994, and Dean of the Graduate School of Bioscience in 2014. Served as a visiting researcher at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in the United States from 1990 to 1991. Specializes in marine zoology and conservation ecology, with a focus on the ecology and life history of apex predators such as sharks. Member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Species Survival Commission Shark Specialist Group, the Japanese Society of Fisheries Science, the Ichthyological Society of Japan, and the Japanese Society for Elasmobranch Studies, among others. Author of Shinkai Zame wo Oe (Chasing Deep-Sea Sharks) (Takarajimasha) and other works.
