Abstract
★Whether Commoners or Lords, People Who Lived Centuries Ago Were Not So Different from Us Today When It Came to Chasing Their Passions.
★Meet 25 Passionate Pioneers of Otaku Culture in the Edo Period Who Devoted Their Lives to What They Loved!
During the Edo period, an era celebrated for its long-lasting peace, people enriched their lives through learning, hobbies, and entertainment. This book introduces what might be called the “otaku pioneers”—people who became deeply absorbed in particular subjects and made them the very purpose of their lives—offering a glimpse into their extraordinary worlds of obsession.
Their interests were as varied as their personalities. One shogun was so fascinated by elephants that he had them brought from a distant foreign land, while one merchant spent 43 years creating a promotional magazine for his hometown. Each of these individuals followed their passions wholeheartedly, devoting themselves to what they loved with an intensity that feels remarkably familiar to us today. Their stories may even make us feel a sense of kinship with them.
Whether you are already deeply immersed in a passion or still searching for something to capture your imagination, join Nameko Shinsan as your guide and take a peek into the refreshingly uninhibited desires of these Edo-period enthusiasts.
