Abstract

There lived an Ainu family on the shore of Kussharo. One day they got a visit from a man who has a passion for wood curving, and he starts study with Keizo. At first, they have no idea how to build a relationship with Masahiko but slowly get closer. This novel makes you think What is home and family mean and what is it to live? A heart moving story which focuses on the relationships between family members.

A few of his novels were adapted into Asian films, such as The City of Lost Souls (Japanese: 漂流街Hepburn: Hyōryū-gai) and Sleepless Town (also known as Sleepless Town, 不夜城) released in 2000 and 1998.The work 「A boy and the dog」（Japanese:少年と犬） are winning the 163rd Naoki Prize for 2,020 years.
