Author’s Information

Gengo Akiba  
Born in Tokyo in 1943, he graduated from Komazawa University. After training at Eiheiji Temple and serving as head priest, he spent a year and a half in California and at a temple in Tokyo before coming to the U.S. in 1987, he moved to the U.S. and was appointed a North American Kaikyoshi. In 1997, he has served as the head of the Soto Zen organization in North America. He was the International Missionary General for North America for thirteen years, visiting Zen centers throughout North America. In 1999, he chaired the organizing committee for the Stanford University Symposium on the 800th Anniversary of the Birth of Zen Master Dogen. Once he retired from his position as general director, he returned in 2015 to launch the Tenpyozan Zendo project, the first full-scale Zen temple in the U.S., which will be the Zenrinji Temple.
