Shinjuku's entertainment district is a one-of-a-kind mix of bars, soaplands（ massage parlor）, gay towns, transvestite communities, and lesbian hangouts.
This book digs up in old maps and photographs the few remaining traces of a former "sexual place" in a corner of the city, reminding us that the forgotten stories of "brothels," "red lines," and "blue lines" of the prostitution zone once lay dormant in this city where various sexuality coexisted.
The process of creating "Shinjuku," the "entertainment district," is deciphered in this book.

Author’s Information

Born in Chichibu, Saitama, 1955. Researcher on the social and cultural history of sexuality.
Specializes in the history of gender/sexuality, especially the social and cultural history of gender transgression (transgender) and the history of prostitution ("mainly red line"). He is currently a part-time lecturer at Gunma University (School of Medicine), Meiji University.
