Abstract

In August 1945, due to Japan's defeat in World War II, the Japanese living in Korea, which had been a Japanese colony, suddenly found themselves stranded in a foreign land. Reiko, at 11 years old, and her family face a harsh winter in the northern port town of Jinamnam-po. Amidst the cold, food shortages, looting by Soviet soldiers, and the confusion of North Korea's foundation, the mother and her six children struggle to survive until their eventual return to Japan. This is their miraculous true story.
