Abstract
For the elderly who wish for a "peaceful death" rather than life extension, the author opened a home for end-of-life care on Chiburijima Island in Oki. Through the lives of islanders who live accepting death without going against the laws of nature, the author contemplates the origin of life and death.

Kumiko Shibata
Born in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture, in 1952. After working at a senior welfare facility, she established a hospice on a remote island. She then moved her activities to the mainland and founded the general incorporated association, the "Japan Hospice Association." As a hospice worker, she supports those preparing to depart this life while also giving lectures and other activities to promote the culture of end-of-life care. She currently serves as the Executive Director of the general incorporated association "Nagomi no Sato," and the President of the "Japan Hospice Association." Her works include "'Thank You' is a Word of Prayer - Happy Elders Living on a Remote Island in Oki."
