Author’s Information
Born in Kyoto in 1949. Born near temples and the entertainment district, he grew up in close contact with shaved-headed monks and gorgeously dressed maiko, feeling the reversal of elegance and simplicity. When he entered university, he was drawn to the "duality" and "ambiguity" of philosophy, and decided to pursue philosophy. He is a two-faced philosopher who advocates and explores "clinical philosophy," which connects philosophical thinking to the fields of medicine, nursing care, and education. He served as President of Osaka University from 2007 to 2011, and as President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Kyoto City University of Arts from 2015 to 2019. He is also Director of Sendai Mediatheque and Vice Chairman of the Suntory Foundation. He is a contributor to the Asahi Shimbun column "Ori Ori no Kotoba"
His main works include "The Labyrinth of Mode" (Chikuma Gakugei Bunko, Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities), "The Power of Listening" (Chikuma Gakugei Bunko, Takeo Kuwahara Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities), "The Reason for Procrastination" (Kadokawa Sensho, Yomiuri Literature Prize), and "Clinical Philosophy Clinic for When You Feel Like Giving Up."
