Abstract

This is the latest edition of the color name encyclopedia bible by Kunio Fukuda, the "color giant" and leading color researcher in Japan. After Fukuda passed away in 2013, the book was completely revised with the supervision and cooperation of the Japan Color Research Institute, with which he was deeply involved. 12 colors have been added to the previous edition, "New Edition: 507 Color Names," for a total of 519 colors. Accurate color samples of all colors, including the 269 colors of the JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards), are covered with Munsell values, RGB, and CMYK data. In addition, the world of color that expands from color names is discussed based on many domestic and international documents. In addition to the high reliability of the content, the tasteful writing makes it enjoyable as a reading material on color culture. In this revision, 79 elegant "layered colors" that began in the Heian period have been added. All color values have been reconfirmed and appropriately revised, and the text has been revised to a minimum to suit modern times. This is the definitive edition that conveys Fukuda's message to anyone who loves color or works with color: "I hope that you will enjoy the clever use of words used by our predecessors to name colors and the richness of their sensibility toward color."
