Abstract

This book is a manual for the Grande Lenormant Cards (officially known as the Grange de Mademoiselle Lenormant Cards), oracle cards launched in France in 1845. (It comes with a total of 56 cards: 52 original Grange Lenormant Cards + 4 Gentlemen and Ladies Cards).
The cards are said to have been created by a disciple of the legendary fortune-teller Mademoiselle Lenormant, and each card depicts a mythological or alchemical scene, a constellation, the alphabet, playing cards, geomancy, flowers and French culture, each with its own meaning, making the cards look like a collection of oracle cards. The cards have their own meanings, giving them the appearance of a collection of oracle cards. At a quick glance, the cards look ‘bizarre’, but that is why they are so fascinating to pursue in depth once you get hooked. The main illustrations, which play an important role in deciphering the cards, are ‘story scenes’, which gives the cards a sense of storytelling and allows the user to immerse themselves in the story and enjoy reading the cards.
It is also a tool for learning about Western mystical thought and French culture, such as mythology and alchemy.
The main illustrations on the cards are on subjects favoured by those interested in Western mystical thought, such as Greek mythology (35 out of 52 cards), alchemy (7 out of 52 cards) and Egyptian mythology (2 out of 52 cards). The sub illustrations also depict various scenes and elements of French culture, offering a delightful glimpse into the 19th century.
