Abstract

Set in the 1990s in Shonan and California, this youth "illustrated" novel follows the growth of childhood friends Haruka and Michio through illustrations and their correspondence over ten years. Born on the same day, they become especially close after rescuing a cat. However, at age 10, Michio moves to the U.S. due to his parents' job transfer. Haruka joins a competitive choir in Japan, while Michio struggles to fit in at his new school but finds solace and friends through rock music, eventually forming a band. As Haruka progresses to high school, she becomes passionate about drawing and considers attending an art university, despite challenges in choir and friendships. Their bond strengthens through letters, but Michio harbors a secret. Michio's band faces a CD sales competition against a local rival for a spot in a major festival. He asks Haruka to design the CD cover, marking their first cross-ocean collaboration. They complete the CD jacket, but Haruka suddenly becomes unreachable...

Recommendation: "What does it mean to grow up? Haru-chan, Michio-kun, thank you for sharing your precious time with us." — Novelist Mizuki Tsujimura
