Abstract

A novel written in the style of a personal essay, this work explores the life of a lonely middle-aged man navigating modern society. Twenty years ago, author Tatsuhiko Takimoto resonated with readers through Welcome to the NHK, a piercing depiction of a socially withdrawn youth. Now in middle age himself, he confronts new hardships—aging, poverty, and social isolation—while searching for a way to live as a “superman.”

The story begins as the protagonist, unable to meet conventional success standards like income, height, education, or age, comes face to face with the harsh realities of dating apps. Realizing he has no place in the romantic marketplace, he turns to conversations with Rei—an imaginary girlfriend who exists only in his mind. Through their exchanges, he resolves not to live as a “loser” in society’s terms, but to pursue an extraordinary form of existence.

With a humorous yet poignant voice, the novel explores what it means to redefine one’s value and live authentically outside society’s norms. It sheds light on the struggles of loneliness, poverty, and identity faced by many middle-aged men today.
