Abstract

Once known as “Japan's Hollywood,” Kyoto's Uzumasa district is still home to two film studios, Toei Kyoto Studio and Shochiku Studio, which continue to produce period dramas. In 2025, with period dramas gaining attention thanks to the Emmy Award-winning ‘SHOGUN’ and the blockbuster hit “Samurai Time Slicker,” we conducted an in-depth investigation of both studios in Kyoto.
