Abstract

At the Bird Research Lab of R University in Tokyo, professors, postdocs, and graduate students spend their days immersed in the study of birds.

One day, as part of a trial run for an automatic incubator intended for cuckoo brood parasitism research, they decide to warm a fertilized quail egg. Before the watchful eyes of the researchers, a tiny life hatches—giving birth to "Uzzu," a quail who quickly becomes the beloved mascot of the laboratory.

Whether sprinting over at the sight of his favorite mealworms, occupying computer keyboards as his favorite resting spot, or falling passionately in love with a researcher's sock, Uzzu’s free-spirited and endearing antics leave the team utterly smitten yet perpetually wrapped around his little claw.
