Abstract

This "Wilderness" is the first series of Baron for 20 years.
The story follows two young boxers as its main characters. Shinji is a handsome, popular guy who dates many women and steadily rises to fame by winning match after match. Shigeru, on the other hand, struggles with a stutter but possesses a natural talent for fighting. Despite his potential, he can't seem to win and eventually becomes entangled with the Yakuza after saving the suicidal son of a Yakuza boss. Through their intense struggles—not only in the boxing ring, but also in their personal relationships and the dark, chaotic underworld—the reader is irresistibly drawn into the world of Baron. Despite a 20-year hiatus, Baron’s illustrations retain their striking power. They remain boldly expressive and deeply immersive, offering a uniquely modern visual style that pulls readers into the comic's universe.

Author’s Information

Terayama Shuji was born in Aomori Prefecture in 1935. In 1966, he published his only full-length novel, "Ah, Wilderness," and challenged himself to new literary expression. He was active in a variety of fields, including poetry, radio, film, and theater, and led the culture of the 1960s and 1970s. He passed away in 1983 at the age of 47 due to sepsis caused by cirrhosis of the liver. Baron Yoshimoto was born in former Manchuria in 1940. He made his debut as a manga artist in 1959, and his representative work, the "Jukyoden" series, garnered support from a wide range of generations, but in 1980 he ended all serializations and moved to the United States. He wrote for Marvel Comics and other publications. After returning to Japan, he focused on painting, but in 2024 he began serializing his first manga in about 20 years, "Ah, Wilderness," on ComicPure.
