Noriko (affectionately known as "Norisuke"), a student at Seikyo Girls' Academy Junior High, secretly referred to Takizawa-san—the leader of the "Princess Group" reigning at the top of Class 2-B—as the "Queen." However, a wristwatch incident in the classroom causes the Queen to abruptly fall from grace.

Noriko's low-profile, wallflower group takes the fallen Queen in, but they soon find themselves completely exhausted by her selfish behavior. Desperate to win back their peaceful everyday lives, Noriko and her friends decide to hatch a plan...

Born in Tokyo in 1981. She won the All Yomimono Newcomer's Prize in 2008 for "Forget-Me, Not Blue" and made her literary debut in 2010 with Shuten no Ano Ko (That Girl at the End of the Line), a collection that included the award-winning story. In 2015, she won the Yamamoto Shugoro Prize for Nile Perch no Joshikai (The Nile Perch Women's Club).

Her novel BUTTER, published in 2017, has been translated into numerous languages worldwide. In 2025, it won three awards, including the British Book Award in the Debut Fiction category, and was nominated for the International Dagger Award. That same year, she received the Noma Publishing Culture Award.

Her other works include Watashi ni Fusawashii Hotel (A Hotel Right for Me), Lunch no Akko-chan (Akko's Lunches), Ito-kun A to E, Honya-san no Diana (Diana of the Bookstore), Magical Grandma, Rantan (Lantern), Tsuideni Gentlemen (Gentlemen as an Afterthought), All Not, and Ainiku Anta no Tame Janai (Unfortunately, It's Not For You).
