Abstract
In 1918, Zenshoan's third abbot, Enzan Makita, compiled "Extracts from the Records of Zenshoan" as a source for Zenshoan and the true biography of Koji Tetsushu. He published a collection of selected passages from the collection, titled "Koji Tetsushu's Sincerity." Subsequently, especially after the Pacific War, eight editions of this work were produced and distributed as a private edition of Zenshoan. This project presents a revised and updated version of the work originally published in 1962, the 75th anniversary of Yamaoka Tetsushu's death. Based on interviews conducted by editor Makita over a period of 20 years with Tetsushu's family, acquaintances, and disciples, this work dramatically portrays his life, words, and deeds, as well as his actions during the turbulent period from the end of the Edo period to the opening of Japan to the world. Written in a literary style (a blend of Japanese and Chinese), it is a richly engaging read. The book is further enhanced by a commentary on the publication by the current head priest of Zenshoan Temple, Reverend Masanobu Hirai, and new translations of Chinese poetry and classical Chinese by expert Atsushi Sato, lecturer at Toyo University. A master of "sword, Zen, and calligraphy" - this is a monumental book for learning about this historical and legendary figure who created modern Japan. The opening page includes a frontispiece depicting Zenshoan Temple treasures.
