Abstract
The renowned children's author Kunpei Higashi has left behind many masterpieces. Now, one of his representative works—the Nyanko-chan Ehon (Little Kitty Picture Book) series for young children—is being republished by its original publisher, Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha!
The stories feature energetic and slightly handful little kittens. Whether they refuse to leave their mother's side, fail to keep promises, or struggle to get along with friends—their behavior perfectly mirrors that of growing children.
The bold use of color in his kirie (traditional paper cutouts) and the catchy, rhythmic text immediately draw readers into the world of the story. The narrative is never preachy; instead, its charm lies in a structure that naturally prompts children to think, "What should I do?" while simply enjoying being read to.
Somewhat humorous and a little bit magical. These stories, with their core of gentle strength, offer new discoveries even for adult readers. This is a must-read both for the generation that originally grew up with the series and for children discovering it for the very first time.
▶ Synopsis: Iya-Iya Nyanko (The "No-No" Kitty)
Iya-Iya Nyanko absolutely hates taking baths. Instead of getting into the warm tub, he just messes around and plays with the soap.
Then, who should appear once again but the old witch! Thrilled to find someone else who hates baths, she decides they should be great friends. Reaching down from high up in the sky, she grabs the kitty and pulls him right up...!
