Abstract

Far more dangerous than a psychopath. A shocking novel exploring the depths of Japan's first "Dark Empath."

Did you know there exists a presence far more cunning and cruel than a psychopath who feels no pain for others?

They read people's emotions effortlessly and use empathy as a weapon to mind-control and thoroughly prey on their targets. This is the "Dark Empath"—a psychological concept first proposed in 2021. Lost Smiles is a terrifyingly poignant story that marks Japan's first direct portrayal of this cutting-edge psychological concept, exposing the frightening reality of their existence.

The protagonist, Ryusei Saegusa, is a man who perfectly grasps the feelings of others and uses that empathy as a weapon to manipulate his targets. Lacking a true sense of self, he harbored a deep inner void, finding purpose only through the validation of others.

Playing the ideal son at home and an ambitious editor at work, Ryusei slips into his targets' lives with a calculated smile. From a high-stakes gamble surrounding the publication of an autobiography for national star Hideki Nango to cold, calculated traps set to eliminate an obstructive boss, the story unleashes a relentless barrage of psychological warfare.

Yet, with every lie he weaves, Ryusei sinks deeper into self-loathing and a living hell of inescapable loneliness. At the end of a dark empathy that preys on human hearts, does glory await him—or utter ruin?

Is the person smiling so kindly beside you truly doing so out of goodwill?
Or are they subtly peering into your mind, waiting for the chance to pull the strings of your life?
