Abstract
After Japan's defeat in the war, the author became a prisoner of war of the Soviet army and spent five years moving from one camp to another throughout Siberia. While working in coal mines, on streets, and in brick factories, he conversed with fellow prisoners, Soviet soldiers, and townspeople, and witnessed a variety of sights. Written after his return to Japan, "Siberian Tales" depicts his harsh experiences, yet it is serene and still shines with a mysterious brilliance.
