Born in Nagasaki in 1934, Michiko Tara is the seventh of eight siblings, all sisters except for her eldest brother, who was killed in the war. Her mother died when she was 10, and her father and sisters raised her. After getting married at 27, she moved to her current apartment complex in Kanagawa Prefecture. 8 years ago, she lost her husband and has lived alone ever since.
