Abstract
Various hardships await us in our lives, as if they were checkpoints. Yet, the collection of Koans (Zen problems) titled "Mumonkan", compiled during the Song Dynasty in China, declares, "There are no checkpoints in life, the road is open in all directions".
The author, who contracted spinal polio at the age of one, interprets all 48 Koans from "Mumonkan" based on his own experience of training at his Zen dojo (Obaku sect) and his thorough contemplation. Through his unique perspective shaped by personal struggles and deep Zen practice, he provides fresh interpretations of these ancient Zen teachings.
