Abstract

Ten monkeys were playing. One monkey ate too many buckwheat noodles and now there are just nine... Colombian poet Héctor Sierra crafted a picture book using Japanese wordplay involving monkeys. The featured monkeys engage in activities related to words that rhyme with 'monkey' in Japanese. And with each activity, one monkey 'exits' the scene. Counting from 1 to 10, then 99 to 100, repeated readings make this book a learning tool for numbers. Watch out for the unique movements of the monkeys in the background drawn by Jun Takahata.
