Abstract
A brand new Moomin critique that reads the novel version of the Moomin series from the perspective of developmental disabilities! This book is full of hints for creating a world like the Moomin Valley, where everyone can live in comfort. The depth of the work and the brilliance of Tove Jansson's talent are more multifaceted.
Why does everyone in the Moomin Valley get on so well together despite their selfishness and disparate personalities? The author, a literary researcher diagnosed with a developmental disorder (autistic spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), says that many of the characters have “neurominority” characteristics. For example, Hemelen, who is a collector, has autistic spectrum disorder, while the adventure-seeking Moomin Papa has ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Through the novel version of Moomin, we learn about developmental disabilities and how, with the right environment, people in the brain minority can feel safe to use their talents.
Author’s Information
The author is an associate professor and a researcher in literature and autism spectrum-related studies. Diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and ADHD at 40, they actively participate in self-help groups, inspiring works like Everyone's in the Water.
