Abstract
Recommended by Lily Franky! "It's hard to get people to nod in agreement. It's even harder to get people to rewatch a movie they've already seen. This book tackles both of these challenges. It's not because Miki is a professional filmmaker. It's because he still gazes at the wonder and magic of movies with the same vigor as a boy watching a movie for the first time." From the author's preface: "The Secrets and Tricks of Film: Contemporary Japanese Film" was written with the intention of being read by people who want to be involved in filmmaking, people who are involved in filmmaking, and people who just love film. This book analyzes the technical ingenuity (direction, visuals, and finishing) of 11 films, or "the secrets and tricks," and puts them into words and diagrams. The subtitle "Why do we want to watch our favorite movies over and over again?" was inspired by my experience as a third-year junior high school student, when I kept watching my favorite Star Wars series, Star Wars: Revenge of the Jedi (now called Return of the Jedi), at a movie theater. I watched it 27 times in 10 days, and it sparked within me a desire to know the secrets of the movie and why we can watch our favorite movies over and over again. The subtitle of this film is where I started.
