Abstract

The rare animal that lives in Hokkaido, the shrew.
This is the first picture book that takes a close look at its strange and mysterious life!

・The surprising ecology of the shrew is revealed for the first time, such as "It's so small that it fits on the tip of your finger!" "It weighs the same as two 1-yen coins!" "It will die if it doesn't eat anything for four hours!"
・Full of precious photos that capture the life of the rare shrew that no one has ever seen before!
・The world's smallest mammal, the baby Tokyo shrew, is revealed for the first time in a book!

This book is a picture book of photos of the tiny shrew that lives in a microscopic world against the backdrop of majestic nature. The author is Mr. Rokuta, a director and nature photographer who works on nature programs such as NHK's "Darwin Has Come!" and "Sawayaka Nature 100 Scenes". He moved from Kanagawa Prefecture to Hokkaido in pursuit of the shrew, and this book is the result of three years of close observation! The Tokyo shrew is about 5 cm long and weighs about 2 g. It is a rare animal that lives only in Hokkaido. Their charm lies not only in their small size and cuteness, but also in their surprising, previously unknown ecology, including their diet, hiding places, and child rearing. This book will help you understand the preciousness and wonder of life as you watch the world's smallest shrews struggle to survive. It also comes with an information page that reveals the characteristics of their bodies, the secret of their names, and behind-the-scenes footage, as well as a QR code for a special video that shows their incredible smallness and how they raise their young!
