Abstract

A pictorial novel based on a true story. The author, Heisuke Kitazawa, is a popular illustrator active in a wide range of fields in Japan and abroad, including product packaging for the Japanese confectionery brand "Francais" and the French perfume "KENZO parfums," as well as book covers and CD artwork. The book design is by renowned book designer Naoko Nakui. This colorful and extravagant book focuses on "kawaii" in every detail. In a corner of Tokyo, "I," an unsuccessful illustrator, picks up a strange-looking kitten. This cat has memories of a previous life living in the U.S. and recalls the beaches of California. The cat and I grow up together, our family grows, and we eventually have to say goodbye. This is a heartwarming autobiographical story with subcultures such as Japanese and American music and video games from the 1990s to the 2010s. Included is a bonus section that introduces English proverbs related to cats in bilingual Japanese-English translations.
